BONUS RETURN - Reducing Emissions by Turning Nutrients and Carbon into Benefits
BONUS RETURN is an EU-funded project whose mission is to identify, assess and work towards scaling composites of eco-technologies that can turn nutrients and carbon into benefits in the Baltic Sea Region.
The specific objectives of the project can be divided into 5 interlinked categories as follows:
- Support innovation and market uptake of eco-technologies,
- Reduce knowledge gaps on policy performance, enabling/constraining factors, and costs and benefits of eco-technologies,
- Provide a framework for improved systematic stakeholder involvement,
- Support commercialization of eco- technologies, and
- Establish a user-driven knowledge platform and improve technology-user interface.
BONUS RETURN will identify and assess promising emerging eco-technologies that will be supported by transdisciplinary analysis of the capacity of eco-technologies to address multiple sustainability challenges. The co-enquiry process with stakeholders will support an evidence-based review and a sustainability analysis of a number of selected eco-technologies.
A comparative case study analysis will be applied that engages local businesses, civil society and public authorities in three case studies in Finland (Vantaanjoki), Sweden (Fyrisån) and Poland (Slupia). To ensure this research has regional relevance, it will be conducted in close collaboration with existing networks such as Race for the Baltic and local businesses across the Baltic Sea Region.
SWEDESD is the leader for Work Package 6 on Innovative Methods in Stakeholder Engagement. This involves:
- A Serious Game System Development,
- Consultations with local stakeholders in each catchment area,
- Capacity building for exchange of knowledge and learning at the regional level, and
- National Focal Points’ Coordination
SWEDESD’s role is to foster co-learning processes between the project researchers and a diverse constellation of stakeholders through the development and facilitation of an innovative decision support tool in the form of a Serious Game System. SWEDESD works in close cooperation with the Department of Game Design at Campus Gotland in the development process of the SGS.
In addition, SWEDESD is responsible for the active fostering of scaling in and of the project. In the enactment of a scaling approach, BONUS RETURN will focus on eco-technologies that can address the relationships between nutrients and key interconnected challenges. Cognisant that every context is defined by different relationships, the scaling of eco-technologies is supported by a deliberative approach and scaling model, Re-Solve, developed by SWEDESD and partners, which surfaces stakeholder needs, values and priorities that determine the relevance of eco-technologies.
