This week, SWEDESD and Åbo Akademi University co-facilitated the first face-to-face event in the Baltic University Programme (BUP) teachers’ course on ESD, at Kaunas University of Technology in Lithuania.

The Finnish BUP center at Åbo Akademi University has organized an ESD annual conference for BUP university teachers since 2004. Following suggestions by the participating teachers, SWEDESD and Åbo Akademi have now developed an ESD course, which in addition to sustainability themes also includes methodology, such as e learning, peer learning and a change project.

The aim of the course is to support university teachers to integrate sustainable development priorities into their teaching and courses to strengthen the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals; e.g. Goal 4, which seeks to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote life-long learning opportunities for all”, Goal 13 “take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts” and Goal 12 “ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns”.

27 teachers from 9 countries participated in the first face-to-face event at Kaunas University, Lithuania. After a successful fulfillment of the course, the participants will receive a diploma/certificate corresponding to 5 credits by the Centre for Lifelong Learning at Åbo Akademi University, Finland. The next workshop will take place in March 2018 in Riga.
