Flagship project on Education for Sustainable Development launched in Central Asia

SWEDESD participated in the first planning meeting of a project to empower teacher educators in Central Asia to integrate sustainable development priorities and goals into their teacher education programmes. 

The flagship project is part of the Global Action Programme (GAP) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and this meeting was organized to consult with partners and to contextualize GAP implementation in Central Asia. It was held on the 12th to 13th of December 2016 in Almaty, Kazakhstan and organised by UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office in cooperation with UNESCO Tashkent, UNESCO Bangkok, with a support from the government of Japan.

Shepherd Urenje, SWEDESD, talked about how higher education institutions in Central Asia can be empowered to ensure that teaching and learning approaches develop the skills for addressing the global challenges of the 21st century, based on experiences from a similar project in Southern Africa.

Local institutions, education centres and government agents in four countries have initiated this so called “Change project” in several educational organisations. During the meeting, four expert coordinators were assigned to be supervisors of the programmes on ESD and Global Citizenship Educatio (GCE). The strategy seeks to bring incremental improvements and increase social awareness of ESD and GCE priorities by giving ownership of the process to local educators of Central Asia.

The panel of international agency specialists discussed and planned the execution of the project. Invited participants conducted research on last years` integration attainment of ESD and GCE programmes in respective countries.

By the end of the meeting all participants agreed on the stages of Change project implementation in Central Asia with assistance of Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) and supervision by SWEDESD and UNESCO.
